When I think of Tal Bauer, my mind goes to political intrigue. suspense, mystery, murder...well, you get the idea. The Jock is a departure from these themes, but is nonetheless completely Bauer. A strong story with wonderful, well-developed characters and fantastic writing kept me turning the pages until I got to the end.Closeted Texas football jock meets out nursing student on a college-sponsored language study program in Paris and sparked fly. It gets angsty once they return to Texas, so grab some tissues and a pint of ice cream (or comfort food of your choice). But Tal doesn't leave us hanging, so you'll get your HEA by the end of the book.Tal proves that he can write more than just political suspense stories and, like everything else he does it so well. Looking forward to see what else he has up his sleeve. This book is a departure from Bauer's usual romantic thrillers, and boy what an amazing first foray into College/Sports romance! I am admittedly not a fan of the college romance sub genre (big sports romance fan tho), because I always find the HEA endings a bit too much to buy (young love is more fickle IRL lol), and honestly a whole lot of them are filled with juvenile stereotyping, and that becomes tiresome to read.Not this one. First off, the characters have such depth to them. Yes they're young (21ish), and they definitely have the usual college life, but Bauer has written them in a way that you get to see their individual raw emotions. You see the extent their anguish, their triumphs, and their deliciously angsty journey to life changing decisions. Wes -- oh boy I do not think I've ever loved a Bauer character this much. He's a gentle soul, but his passion for his love of football, his teammates, and Justin seeps out out of every pore of his skin. He's a good man through and through, and being pulled in all different directions of life was the crux of his journey. Justin -- tough as nails, and knows what he wants, doesnt take any bs, and totally the person Wes needs in his life 100%. They have magnificent chemistry from the get go. Its so easy to be ensnared by how they fall, and ultimately, how they work out a life together.For football fans, this book has actual real football action. LOL. It's written in a way that you almost see it play it out in your mind, every move and every twitch of the players' muscle. The highs and lows of the game are very well laid out. For non football, or even non "sportsball" fans, the sports scenes are never so technical, never too long winded that it makes your eyes glaze over. Bauer has somehow found the perfect balance for this!Also I need to mention that one of the best parts of the book for me is that team brotherhood that was woven throughout it. The Jock definitely centered on Wes and Justin, but the supporting character of friendship was a wonderful thing to experience too.The HEA, as is the usual Bauer style, completely EPIC. It is glorious, and while it is EVER SO SATISFYING, makes u want to read more of this bunch. My fingers are crossed that Bauer writes a book 2 for one of the supporting characters that definitely ended up captivating me!
